Getting a smile makeover is an exciting journey, and for many patients, traveling to Istanbul is the best way to get premium care at an affordable price. Of course, the process doesn't happen overnight. Between the initial preparation of your teeth and the final bonding of your custom E-Max or Celtra Duo veneers, there is a waiting period of about 3 to 5 days. During this time, you will wear temporary veneers.
Temporary veneers do a vital job in protecting your teeth, but they aren't meant to last forever. They are made of a lightweight acrylic resin and are attached with a temporary cement that is designed to let go easily when the time comes. Because of this, they need a little extra care to make sure they stay in place and feel comfortable while you enjoy your stay in Istanbul. At Dent of Istanbul, Dr. Nilgün Başar and our team want your dental holiday to be as smooth as possible, so we have put together this simple, practical care guide.
Why Temporary Veneers Are Important
To prepare your teeth for porcelain veneers, a very thin layer of enamel (typically 0.3mm to 0.5mm) is removed. This leaves the underlying dentin layer exposed. Temporary veneers do a few important jobs while your permanent ones are being made:
- Protection: They cover the exposed dentin, protecting the nerve endings from hot, cold, and acidic foods, which keeps you from feeling sharp sensitivity.
- Aesthetics and Speech: They make sure you can smile and speak normally while exploring the sights of Istanbul. They also act as a physical trial run, helping you get used to the feel of your new tooth length.
- Maintaining Position: Teeth naturally want to drift slightly when their contact points are changed. Temporaries keep your teeth in their exact positions, ensuring the final porcelain veneers fit perfectly without any alignment issues.
Eating and Dining in Istanbul: Safe vs. Unsafe Foods
Istanbul is famous for its food, from traditional kebabs to rich baklava. While you can certainly enjoy the local cuisine, you need to select your meals carefully while wearing temporary veneers. The temporary cement is designed to hold the veneers in place under light pressure, but it cannot handle heavy biting or pulling forces.
Dietary Guidelines for Temporary Veneers
To keep your temporaries from cracking or popping off, follow this simple food guide:
| Safe Foods (Soft & Easy to Chew) | Unsafe Foods (Hard, Sticky, or Tough) |
|---|---|
| Soup, broths, and soft stews | Hard crusty bread, bagels, or simit |
| Mashed potatoes, hummus, and yogurt | Sticky sweets, Turkish delight (lokum), and chewing gum |
| Soft pasta, rice, and well-cooked vegetables | Apples, raw carrots, and corn on the cob (unless cut) |
| Fish, minced meat, and soft scrambled eggs | Tough meats, steaks, and nuts or seeds |
| Bananas, avocados, and soft berries | Ice cubes (never chew on ice) |
Important Dining Tip: Avoid biting directly into any food with your front teeth. Even soft foods, like a sandwich or a slice of pizza, should be cut into bite-sized pieces and chewed gently using your back teeth.
Oral Hygiene with Temporary Veneers
It's really important to keep your gums clean and healthy during this transition period. If your gums get irritated, swollen, or bleed easily, it can get in the way of bonding your permanent veneers. To avoid any issues, you will just need to tweak your cleaning routine a bit so you don't accidentally pop the temporaries off.
Brushing
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a gentle, circular motion. Do not scrub aggressively. You can use your normal toothpaste, but avoid whitening toothpastes, which can contain abrasive particles that might scratch the acrylic surface of the temporaries.
Flossing (The Slide-Out Method)
Flossing is highly recommended to keep the gums clean, but traditional flossing can pull a temporary veneer right off. Follow this specific technique:
- Gently slide the dental floss down between the teeth.
- Clean the tooth surfaces near the gumline.
- Do NOT pull the floss back up.
- Instead, let go of one end of the floss and gently pull it through sideways, drawing it out from the side of the tooth.

Managing Tooth Sensitivity
It is very common to feel a little sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods while wearing temporary veneers. This happens because the acrylic material doesn't insulate the tooth's inner layers as well as natural enamel or permanent porcelain. To manage this sensitivity:
- Avoid extremely hot coffee or ice-cold drinks. Drink beverages at room temperature.
- Use a sensitive-formula toothpaste (such as Sensodyne) during your stay.
- If you feel mild discomfort, over-the-counter pain relievers like Ibuprofen or Paracetamol will easily manage it.
What to Do If a Temporary Veneer Comes Off
Since temporary cement is designed to let go easily, a temporary veneer might occasionally come loose or fall off. If this happens, don't worry. It's not an emergency, and it won't affect the final result of your permanent veneers at all.
- Retrieve the Temporary: Locate the temporary veneer and keep it safe. In many cases, it can be cleaned and re-bonded in a few minutes.
- Contact the Clinic: Send a WhatsApp message to your patient coordinator at Dent of Istanbul. We will arrange a quick, priority appointment to re-cement it for you.
- Temporary Self-Fix (If you are away from the clinic): If a temporary comes off late at night and the tooth is sensitive, you can buy a tube of denture adhesive (such as Protefix or Corega) from a local Turkish pharmacy (Eczane). Place a tiny dab of adhesive inside the temporary, gently press it back onto the tooth, and wipe away any excess. This will keep the tooth protected until you can visit our clinic.
By taking these simple precautions, you can ensure a comfortable, pain-free transition period, leaving you free to enjoy the beautiful city of Istanbul while our laboratory crafts your brand-new, permanent smile.
