For decades, titanium has been the gold standard for dental implants. Thanks to its incredible strength and ability to fuse with bone, it has been used safely in orthopedic and dental surgeries for over 50 years. However, as more people look for holistic health options and metal-free treatments, ceramic dental implants made from zirconia have become a highly popular alternative. While both materials do an excellent job of integrating with your jawbone, they have key differences when it comes to appearance, how they interact with your body, and their physical structure.
Here at Dent of Istanbul, we offer both top-tier titanium and metal-free zirconia implants. Led by Dr. Nilgün Başar, our team carefully looks at your bone density, gum thickness, and aesthetic goals to help you choose the material that's right for your body. If you're planning a dental trip to Turkey, understanding how these two materials compare will help you make the best decision for your long-term health.
Titanium Dental Implants: The Reliable Classic
Titanium implants are crafted from medical-grade titanium alloy. They are usually designed as a two-piece system: the implant fixture itself, which acts as the new root in your bone, and a separate connector called an abutment, which links the implant to your new crown.
Why Titanium is a Great Choice:
- Proven Strength: Titanium is incredibly strong yet slightly flexible, which helps it absorb the heavy pressure of daily chewing without cracking or breaking.
- Decades of Success: Because titanium implants have been around for so long, we have dental records spanning decades. Studies show they have a long-term survival rate of over 97% even after 20 years.
- Surgical Flexibility: The two-piece design gives surgeons more options. If your teeth are slightly misaligned, we can adjust the angle of the abutment to make sure your final crown sits perfectly.
Zirconia Dental Implants: The Natural, Metal-Free Option
Zirconia implants are made from zirconium dioxide, a high-strength ceramic. While zirconium is technically a metal on the periodic table, when it’s processed into zirconium dioxide, its structure changes completely into a ceramic. This means it is 100% metal-free, highly biocompatible, and will never rust or corrode in the mouth.
Many zirconia implants are made as a single piece, meaning the implant post and the connector are one solid unit. However, we also use modern two-piece zirconia implants, which give us more flexibility during surgery.
Why Zirconia is a Great Choice:
- Beautiful, Natural Look: Zirconia is naturally white and slightly translucent, just like real teeth. If you have thin or naturally pale gums, a titanium implant can sometimes show through as a faint grey shadow. Zirconia completely avoids this, making it the perfect choice for front teeth that show when you smile.
- Completely Hypoallergenic: If you have a metal allergy, a sensitive immune system, or simply prefer a holistic approach to your health, zirconia offers a completely safe, biocompatible option.
- Fewer Bacteria: The surface of zirconia is incredibly smooth. Because of this, plaque and bacteria find it very difficult to stick to the implant, which helps protect your gums from inflammation and infections.
- No Corrosion: Unlike metals, which can react to the moist environment of the mouth over time, zirconia is completely inert. It won't corrode or release metallic ions into your body.
Head-to-Head Comparison: Titanium vs. Zirconia
To help you compare these two materials, here is a direct summary of their performance across key clinical metrics:
| Feature | Titanium Implants | Zirconia Implants (Metal-Free) |
|---|---|---|
| Material Type | Metal Alloy (Titanium) | Ceramic (Zirconium Dioxide) |
| Biocompatibility | Very High (highly biocompatible) | Excellent (hypoallergenic, inert) |
| Aesthetics | Good (requires opaque ceramic crowns) | Exceptional (no grey shadows at the gumline) |
| Design Options | Two-piece (highly flexible) | One-piece or Two-piece |
| Flexibility & Elasticity | High (absorbs biting forces well) | Low (extremely hard, but less elastic) |
| Average Success Rate | 97% – 99% | 95% – 98% |

Important Surgical Details for Zirconia Implants
While zirconia implants look beautiful and are incredibly gentle on the body, placing them requires a high level of skill. Since many zirconia implants are a single solid piece, we cannot bury them under the gums to protect them while they heal. The top of the implant stays exposed in the mouth from day one.
To make sure the implant fuses perfectly with your bone over the 3 to 6 months after surgery, it must be kept completely free from chewing pressure. Even tiny movements can disrupt the healing process. Because of this, Dr. Nilgün Başar uses custom surgical guides and temporary protective splints to keep the implant safe. Zirconia is also best suited for patients who have good bone volume and a well-balanced bite.
What Do Zirconia Implants Cost in Turkey?
Zirconia implants are considered a premium dental treatment. Because the ceramic material is complex to manufacture and requires specialized surgical care, they do cost more than traditional titanium implants.
Back home in the UK or Germany, a single zirconia implant and crown can easily run between €2,000 and €3,500. At Dent of Istanbul, we work directly with top Swiss manufacturers like Straumann to offer their PURE Ceramic zirconia implants for €900 to €1,200. By managing our own clinical facility, we're able to keep these advanced, holistic treatments affordable and accessible for our patients.
